Garden, Season 2 - First Sprouts

Our second season of community gardening is taking off quickly.  Today we stopped by to water the plot and discovered that about 33% of our planted boxes has yielded sprouts.

I’m not sure what the sprouts are; Keisuke did the sowing alone this time, and he keeps a diagram tucked into a book somewhere on his nightmare of a desk.  I do know we had some healthy-looking beans.

Out came the transparent cups with their bottoms cut off, and the used strawberry baskets.  We put them over our seedlings and hold them in place with twig stakes pulled from our scattering of mulch. These are our state-of-the-art anti-pest devices.

I’m loving this new gardening method; square foot appeals to the fanatically ordered Capricorn in me.  Chaos has limited appeal.  I like things to be tidy and cute.

I didn’t take any photos today, but I will when we go back in a few days to mix and pour two more boxes of soil and to plant our zucchini.

Oh, exciting news:  our side of the garden center is getting a pee shack!  Four walls and the very latest in flush technology.   No more pit toilets for the backward southerners; we can finally do our business in a real building, like the fancy Yankees north of the Boulevard.  I am beyond excited about this simple luxury.  The City has broken ground, and they expect to be done with construction by Christmas.

Hip, hip, hurray!
