Anyone have ideas about what to do with way, way too many chives?
We spent about an hour in the garden today — in 100-degree heat — clearing out our plot for Fall. We harvested what looked healthy: some chard we ended up throwing away (too many aphid eggs on them); sorrel; a lot of scallions; a large handful of cherry tomatoes from our neighbor, whose plants came through our fence (we ain’t complainin’); and chives.
Washed them, put them in a freezer bag, and now we have no idea what to do next.
Raised beds may get built tomorrow morning, before the day gets hot. Our goals for Season 2:
- Creating 4, 3-foot square beds
- Zucchini
- Marigolds
- A corner reserved for a chair. I’m obsessed with Adirondack chairs but am stymied by the lack of a lawn or large-sized patio, so our garden plot may have to do.
- No more plants that attract aphids
- Using our leftover paint sample cans from the house to paint our fence and make it pretty
Also, we made a discovery today. I had a hunch that our neighbor’s plot was wider than ours, and I was right. We’re supposed to have a 20’ x 10’ plot, but ours is not even a full 9’ wide. The neighbor on the other side has encroached across our property line. So it’s not a 200 square foot garden, as promised. It’s more like 170. Am thinking of being cheeky and asking city to refund me 15% of my annual fee.
